Angry With The Mayor

The mayor of a small town in the mountains was walking down Main Street one day when he saw his friend, Mr. Smith, coming toward him with an armful of firewood. “Good morning,” said the mayor to Mr. Smith as they passed each other on the street.

“Hello there!” replied Mr. Smith cheerfully and continued up the hill without saying another word. When he got home that night, Mrs. Smith asked her husband how it had been going at work today. He told her about seeing the mayor out for a walk but didn’t say anything else until dinner time rolled around. Then he announced: “I’ve decided I’m not going back tomorrow.”

Mrs. Smith looked surprised by this announcement. She knew that Mr. Smith worked hard all week long so she couldn’t understand why he would suddenly decide to quit after only working half a day. But then again, she wasn’t very bright either because she never thought much before speaking anyway.

So instead of asking any questions or trying to figure things out herself, she just nodded along like most women do whenever their husbands start talking about something serious. After a few seconds of silence, Mr. Smith added: “And you know what? You’re fired too! Get your stuff together right now and get outta here!”

Mr. Smith’s wife stared blankly into space for several minutes while her mind tried desperately to process everything that had happened since lunchtime. Finally, she snapped out of it and started packing her bags.

When she finished gathering her belongings, she turned to her husband and demanded to know where she should go next. Her husband pointed to the door and shouted: “You can stay with my sister if you want! Just don’t come back!” And with that, he slammed the front door behind him and left his wife standing alone in the middle of the living room.

When Mr. Smith got home later that evening, he found his house empty except for a note lying on top of the kitchen table. It read: Dear Mr. Smith,

Thank you for taking care of us these past years. We will miss having you around. However, we have decided to move away from this place. Please take good care of yourself and God bless. Love, Your Family.

Sincerely yours,

Your Wife & Children.

After reading the letter, Mr. Smith sat quietly in shock for a moment. Then he picked up his phone and called his boss at work. His manager answered immediately. “Hey Jim, sorry to bother you during your vacation, but could you please tell me who is currently filling in for you?”

Jim hesitated briefly before replying: “Well…it’s kind of weird actually. Nobody has taken over yet…”

His supervisor laughed loudly and said: “Oh really?! Well, let’s see what happens then. If nobody shows up tomorrow, I’ll assign someone to fill in for you. Thanks, man, talk to you soon!”

With that, Mr. Smith hung up his cell phone and went straight to bed. In the morning, he woke up early, showered, shaved, ate breakfast, packed some clothes, grabbed his car keys, and headed off to work. As usual, he parked his vehicle near the entrance of the building and walked inside.

Once he reached the lobby, he noticed his coworker sitting at his desk staring vacantly at nothing in particular. This made Mr. Smith feel uncomfortable so he quickly approached his colleague and said hello. “Hi Bob, how are you doing today?”

Bob responded with a confused look on his face: “What am I supposed to be doing? Why did you call me here first thing in the morning?”

Mr. Smith felt awkward again and explained: “Uh…well, apparently somebody needs to cover for you starting tomorrow.”

Bob shook his head slowly and sighed deeply. “No way, dude. That’s impossible. There hasn’t been anyone hired to replace me yet.”

At this point, Mr. Smith became angry and yelled: “Okay then! Who’s covering for you?!”

As expected, no one volunteered to answer the question. Instead, everyone simply stared silently at Mr. Smith. At last, he gave up and stormed out of the office. By the time he arrived home, he had completely forgotten about his job.

That afternoon, he met up with his friends at a local bar. They were drinking beer and playing darts when Mr. Smith suddenly remembered something important. He excused himself from the group and ran upstairs to his apartment.

When he got there, he frantically searched through drawers and cabinets looking for a piece of paper and a pen. Eventually, he found both items and wrote a short message to his family:

Dear Mom, Dad & Sis,

Sorry I haven’t written in such a long time. Things have gotten pretty crazy lately. First, I lost my job. Now, I’m also losing my house. Don’t worry though, I’ve already spoken to my lawyer and he says that everything will turn out fine. Everything always does.

Love,

Your Son.

He folded the note neatly and placed it under his pillow. Then he returned downstairs and joined his friends once more. The following day was Sunday and Mr. Smith slept late. When he finally awoke, he took another shower, ate breakfast, dressed, and drove to church.

Afterward, he visited his parents’ gravesite and prayed to God. Then he spent the rest of the day relaxing by the poolside with his girlfriend.

The next few days passed without incident. On Wednesday night, however, Mr. Smith received an urgent phone call from his boss at work. “Listen,” he began, “I need you to come in right now. You’re still technically employed until Friday, but I’d like to get rid of you as fast as possible. So, just make sure you leave tonight instead of tomorrow morning. Okay?”

“Sure thing, boss. See ya then.”

On Thursday, Mr. Smith left work early and stopped by the bank to close all his accounts. Then he rushed back home where he packed his belongings into boxes and loaded them onto his truck. Finally, he pulled out of the driveway and started driving toward the airport.

Once he landed in Florida, he rented a small hotel room and waited patiently for his family to arrive. A couple hours later, they showed up at the front door. It turned out that Mrs. Smith had decided to join her husband after all. She looked very excited to meet him and couldn’t wait to introduce herself. Her daughter, on the other hand, seemed rather hesitant. Nevertheless, she smiled politely and introduced herself too.

When Mr. Smith saw his wife, he immediately forgot about his worries and anxieties. Standing beside her was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen in his entire life. She resembled a goddess with jet black hair, flawless skin, and sparkling green eyes.

Moreover, he could tell that she genuinely cared for him.

After exchanging pleasantries, Mr. Smith asked if his mother-in-law would mind taking care of their two children while he attended to business matters. His request was readily accepted and Mrs. Smith happily agreed to watch over the kids.

Meanwhile, Mr. Smith went down to the lobby to book a flight back to California.

It wasn’t long before he boarded his plane and flew back to Los Angeles. Upon arrival, he picked up the mail from his mailbox and discovered several letters addressed to him. One envelope contained a letter from his former employer informing him that he had won $1 million dollars in sweepstakes.

Another one informed him that he had been awarded a full scholarship to Harvard University. And the final one told him that he had inherited millions of dollars from an unknown relative who had recently died.

In total, these three pieces of correspondence made Mr. Smith feel extremely happy and grateful. However, because he didn’t want to appear ungrateful, he chose not to share any of this information with his family. Instead, he merely thanked them for coming and said goodbye.

The following week, Mr. Smith resumed working at his new job. Although things weren’t quite the same anymore, he managed to settle in fairly quickly. As usual, he worked hard during the day and played even harder at night. In fact, he rarely came home between Monday and Saturday. This caused some friction within his marriage, but his wife eventually learned to accept it. Besides, she enjoyed having so much free time on her hands.

One evening, Mr. Smith’s wife invited her sister over for dinner. While they were eating, the conversation inevitably shifted toward their husbands. At first, they talked about how handsome and charming each man was.

But soon enough, they discussed the differences between men and women. Specifically, they spoke about what makes a good husband versus a bad husband.

Mrs. Smith explained that she believed every married woman should strive to marry someone who is kind, generous, considerate, intelligent, and trustworthy. Furthermore, she added that a great spouse must be willing to do whatever it takes to ensure his or her partner feels loved and appreciated.

Her sister disagreed, claiming that anyone can find a nice guy. All you have to do is go out and date around until you stumble across somebody suitable. Once you do, you simply commit yourself to spending the rest of your life together. That way, you’ll never end up alone again.

Mr. Smith listened attentively to both sides of the argument. He thought about it carefully and tried to imagine himself in either position. Eventually, he realized that neither approach was ideal. After all, there are many different types of people in the world.

Some individuals may seem attractive on the surface, only to turn out to be completely worthless underneath. Others might look terrible on paper, yet prove themselves to be amazing partners once you start dating.

As such, Mr. Smith concluded that finding the perfect mate required more than luck. Rather, it involved careful consideration and plenty of effort. Unfortunately, he knew that nobody else would agree with him. Therefore, he kept quiet and let the subject drop.

A few days later, Mr. Smith received another letter from his former employer congratulating him on winning the lottery. The following day, he opened the newspaper and read an article announcing that he had just graduated cum laude from Harvard University.

Later that afternoon, he got a call from his lawyer telling him that he’d finally inherited millions of dollars from a distant cousin whom he hadn’t heard of since childhood.

He felt overwhelmed by everything that had happened lately. On top of that, he also found it somewhat suspicious that none of this news had reached his family.

The End
